One thing I always say is we should never underestimate the importance of touch, in modern society we are calling out for more of it. We all want to feel touched, hugged and caressed as this stimulates our nerve endings. This is not only a source of pleasure, touch can reduce heart rate and blood pressure and lower our stress hormones.

One way we can achieve this is with the gentlest of touches from this wonderful soft body brush from the Swedish brand Iris Hantverk. I use this every day before my shower to enliven my circulation, caress the skin and get the lymph moving. It’s natural exfoliation with the softest of touches.

The skin is the biggest organ for detoxification in the body, and is referred to as the third Kidney in Chinese Medicine. Helping our body to naturally detox with body brushing, increases blood and lymph flow to both eliminate waste and bring nutrients to your skin.

Regular body brushing can:

  • Reduce the appearance of cellulite
  • Reduce water retention
  • Help firm and tighten skin
  • Remove dead skin cells
  • Boost circulation
  • Prevent ingrown hairs

I really recommend you practice this daily for self-care and to leave your skin ready for the next step in your routine. These brushes are brilliant, they last forever and are handmade in Sweden by highly skilled, visually impaired craftsmen. They are the best in the business and an essential part of my routine.

Can I combine it with other treatments?

Yes! But always consult a doctor as everyone has very individual and sometimes complex health issues. Chinese medicine often works hand in hand with Western medicine and complements the healing process.

How do I make sure I'm using my gua sha tools correctly, without causing damage to my skin?

Please be reassured, it’s very difficult to damage your skin with this time-old technique. Before you try gua sha for the first time, read the instruction leaflet inside the packaging and watch the short video on the product page of this site. Go easy to start with and watch how your skin responds before continuing. Please note, gua sha should not be performed over broken skin, varicose veins, moles, cuts or bruises.
